A failing tree rarely gives much notice, but there are usually signs an experienced eye can spot early. If you notice any of the following on your property in Wirral or Chester, it is worth getting the tree assessed.
The warning signs
- Large dead branches in the canopy, or a section of the crown that fails to come into leaf.
- Cracks or splits in the main stem or where major branches join.
- Fungal growth (brackets or mushrooms) at the base or on the trunk - often a sign of internal decay.
- A lean that has appeared or increased recently, especially after storms.
- Soil heaving or roots lifting on one side of the base.
- Bark that is loose, missing, or peeling away in large areas.
- Hollow or soft areas in the trunk that sound different when tapped.
What to do if you spot them
One sign alone does not always mean a tree must come down - many issues can be managed with pruning or crown reduction. But several signs together, or any sign on a tree near a house, driveway or road, warrants a professional assessment.
Do not attempt to inspect high or unstable parts of a tree yourself. WK Arboriculture provides free tree safety assessments across Wirral and Chester, and same-day response for genuinely dangerous trees. Call 07387 334767.
