Stump grinding works by using a rotating cutting wheel to chip the stump and the top section of the root plate down to below ground level — typically 150-300mm below the surface. The process leaves wood chip mulch which can be raked back into the void, used as garden mulch, or removed from site. The ground then settles, and within a season or two the area can be used for replanting, turfing, or hard landscaping.
We carry out stump grinding as a standalone service or as part of a felling job on the same visit. Our equipment ranges from compact pedestrian grinders that fit through a standard garden gate, to larger tracked machines for bigger stumps or multiple stumps on the same site. We will always assess the right machine for your access and stump size before starting work.
If you have multiple stumps — perhaps following a site clearance or the removal of a row of trees — we can quote for all of them together, which is usually significantly more cost-effective than separate visits. We also work for local authorities, developers, and land managers where larger-scale stump removal programmes are required.
For stumps close to buildings, driveways, or underground services, we take additional care to assess depth and direction of the root plate before grinding begins. We can also advise whether chemical stump treatment is a more appropriate solution in particularly constrained situations.
