Most tree surgery in Wirral can be carried out safely at any time of year, but timing it well reduces stress on the tree, avoids disturbing nesting birds, and can save you money. Here is how the seasons stack up.
Winter (November-February) - the ideal window for most work
For the majority of deciduous trees, winter dormancy is the best time for major pruning, crown reduction and felling. With the leaves down, the structure of the tree is easy to assess, wounds heal cleanly as the growing season begins, and the risk of spreading disease is lower. Firmer ground in dry spells also makes access easier.
Spring & summer - grow, assess, and prune with care
Spring growth makes it the ideal time to spot problems and plan work before the heavier autumn winds arrive. Light pruning, crown thinning and hedge trimming are all fine through summer. Some species are actually better pruned in summer: cherry and plum, for example, are pruned when in leaf to avoid silver leaf disease.
The main caution in spring and early summer is nesting birds - see below.
Autumn - hedges, tidy-ups and storm-proofing
Late summer into autumn is the right window for Leylandii and conifer hedge cutting, and a good time to remove deadwood and reduce sail-heavy crowns before winter storms. Getting weak or overextended limbs dealt with now reduces the risk of storm damage later.
The one hard rule: nesting birds
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is an offence to damage or destroy an active bird nest. The main nesting season runs roughly March to August. We always check for active nests before starting, and will not proceed if birds are nesting - regardless of the season.
The short answer
Winter is best for major work; summer suits light pruning and certain species; autumn is for hedges and storm-proofing. But a dangerous or dead tree should be dealt with whenever it is spotted - safety comes first. If you are unsure, we will advise on the right timing for your specific trees as part of a free quote.
